Due to the unusual configuration of the top landing and stairs it was difficult to come to the perfect solution, on how to install and where to install. It is beautiful and we look forward to sharing it with you.

Creative Proposal

We have had many engagements happen at Abner Adams House, but this was the first time that a guest asked us to help. Joe called a few days before his arrival telling us that he was intending to propose to Nicole, and wanted to do something different and memorable, but needed some help. He asked if we could create a scavenger hunt for her. Those of you that know us and our property, know that this is something that we loved to get involved with. So, after breakfast we asked them if they had taken the time to walk through our woods and trails, and that we wanted to encourage guest to do that more, so we came up with a short scavenger hunt to guide them through. Nicole thought that sounded like a great idea. Good thing, because if she had said, no, it would have taken a little more persuasion on Joe's part.

We gave them an envelope with the first clue, such as follow Sophie's Sweep to the first intersection and find the troll door. There was a new envelope there. We created 8 stops along the paths to the last one that was sitting in 1 dozen long stem red roses. She found it and still had no clue what was happening until she opened it to read "Will you Marry Me", then turned around to find Joe on his knee with ring in hand!!! She was very surprised and very happy. And Joe was very relieved. He was very excited and very nervous all in one.....and She did say YES!

We love being Innkeepers and this is just all part of the fun and memories.

History of the Hill Cumorah Pageant

It all began in the early 1920's when a small group of missionaries from New York City gathered for the Cumorah Conference at the Joseph Smith Farm to celebrate Pioneer Day, the day when Brigham Young first entered the Salt Lake Valley in 1847. In July of 1934, the conference was moved from the Farm to the Hill Cumorah.

Today the Pageant, with its incredible staging, lighting, special effects and costuming is still carefully designed to keep its message of Jesus Christ's love for us both simple and pure. The opening processional of the entire costumed cast through the audience is quite similar to the beginning of many of the great medieval pageants.

To raise money for the Strong Regional Burn Center they have been placing their "flock" all over town. Bird Lovers Delight

Here are some of the birds commonly found on the Abner Adams House 3 1/2 acres: American goldfinch, American robin, black and whites warblers, black-capped chickadee, blue jay, downey woodpecker, Eastern towhee, house finch, mourning dove, Northern cardinal, Northern harrier, pilated woodpecker, ruby-throated hummingbird, yellow warbler, wild turkey.

Special Moments at the Abner Adams House

* A lady from Houston appeared at our door the first week we opened. She said she lived here with her Grandfather (the Rev. Howard, for which our street was named) when she was eight years old. She stayed as a guest the following night
recalling many stories of the house, circa 1935.

* A guest from Arizona, soon after opening, was staying 4 nights to visit family. By the 4th night she called home saying, "I love it here, can I stay 4 more nights?" and she did.

* Many New York City area guests have enjoyed the tranquility of the Abner Adams House park-like setting while relaxing in the gardens or on the benches in the nature trails.

*Runners and bikers have stayed at AAH, planning on waking early for some exercise before breakfast. Many finding it too difficult to leave the bed, barely making it up in time to reach the Dining Room for breakfast. So much for exercise!

*Murder Mystery Dinners. Our first dinner brought a reunion of three sisters to AAH. After a weekend of fun and relaxation, 'the girls' have been back twice since and are booked again in the near future. Their last visit was with their daughters, booking the whole Inn.

*Breakfast Requests! Many significant others have requested "more breakfasts like this when we get home!"

*The guest 'Keeping Room'. The guest area which offers relaxation with overstuffed furniture with TV, movies, games, books, and tourist literature. All for the pleasure of our guests.

*Champaign Hot Air Bubble Tubs. Many guests have inquired as to where they can buy these luxury tubs for their homes. Also inquiries for the sauna-like steam shower of the Escape.

*Many of our wine trail enthusiasts hit the Canandaigua Wine Trail one day, the Keuka Wine Trail and a few on to the Seneca Wine Trail the day after. Their trunks full of boxes of wine. Where's the luggage?

*Wine Trail guests enjoy returning late in the afternoon and taking a bottle of wine with AAH wine glasses, heading to our nature trails to sit on the benches and relax beneath the trees.

*Our golf package couples often leave with promise of bringing friends next summer to join them at another of our many quality, regional golf courses.

*History buffs marvel at the construction of this circa 1810, Federal Style home. Some enjoying the historic connection of AAH to the Erie Canal, accented by a boat trip on the Colonial Belle.

*Nature lovers who vow to return to enjoy more of the many trails, parks, and lakes. All a short drive from Abner Adams House B & B.

*Scrapbookers. It's fun to share in the commeradery of the groups that gather to book the entire Inn for the weekend. Often regretting they had to leave on Sunday.

*A German couple arriving at our door on one Monday afternoon and asked to see our rooms in order to possibly stay one night. They left after 3 nights!

*One busy Summer morning with a Dining Room full of guests, a businessman stated, 'after staying here, why do I spend so much time staying in hotels?"

*Plein Air Painters. One of our most enjoyable weekends was shared with a group of artists that rented the whole Inn. It seems that they must have painted every room, building, garden,tree, and more throughout the property. Certainly a fun experience for all, which we hope will be enjoyed again.

*Unusual coincidence. On one Friday night in May '2007', we had a couple stay with us from Las, Nevada, at the same time guests arrived from Henderson, Nevada. We were certain they must have been traveling together. They arrived hundreds of miles East to Bloomfield, N.Y., on that same night and we discovered they did not know each other!

For Erie Canal History Buffs

Abner Adams House Bed & Breakfast has 2 historic connections to the Erie Canal. In the 1830's Abner Adams and his Bother-In-Law, Josiah Rowley, both took on the challenge of becoming engineering contractors for two sections of the early canal.

Abner left the Town of East Bloomfield, which was settled by his father Deacon John Adams in 1789, and moved to a location West of Rochester. Abner and his sons developed several businesses here, while Abner began his venture in canal construction. The town where they settled now bears their name, Adams Basin.

Josiah Rowley took on one of the more extraordinary feats of early canal construction. He is credited for the engineering of the historic 'Great Embankment'. This is where the Erie canal had to traverse the 'Pre-glacial River Valley of the Genesee River'. The Genesee, since rerouted to the West by glacial activity over 12,000 years ago, carved a wide, deep valley at the location of the Great Embankment. Nearby hills had to be dug out and moved by shovels, wagons, and mules to fill in this old valley in order for the Erie Canal to cross it.

While staying at the Abner Adams House you can kayak, canoe, walk, bike, run the canal or canal tow pathes from the Great Embankment to the historic canal village of Fairport, known for a Lift Bridge noted in Ripley's Believe It or Not. This famous structure has no square corners. This 720 ton bridge crosses the canal at an 'average' angle of 32 degrees, yet each corner of the bridge posesses its own unique angle.

Before heading back to the Bed & Breakfast you might choose to enjoy some for wine sampling at the Casa Larga Vineyard, a short drive South of the canal in Fairport. Dinner? How about some more canal history? About half way home to Abner Adams House stop at the 1818 Tavern and Hotel in Bushnell's Basin, now known as Richardson's Canal House Restaurant. Located close to the Great Embankment.

If your quest for Erie Canal history has not been totally fulfilled by this vacation. Consider at follow up trip to the tiny hamlet of Adams Basin, named for the Adams family. Here the Adams Basin Inn Bed and Breakfast was built in the 1830's by Abner's son, Marcus Adams. This historic Inn contains the only, original Erie Canal Tavern, built during the early canal era, that still remains standing today.
